Wimbledon Ladies’ Doubles Tennis Players
The 2008 Wimbledon ladies’ doubles event saw defending champions Cara Black and Liezel Huber being defeated by rivals Samantha Stosur and Lisa Raymond. Venus and Serena Williams teamed up to eventually win the title, trouncing the Stosur-Raymond partnership 6–2, 6–2.
Cara Black and Liezel Huber lifted the title in 2005 and 2007, Black was successful in London as well in 2004, in partnership with Rennae Stubbs. The powerful duo will be eager to claim the ladies' doubles title once again at Wimbledon 2009.
The Chinese pairing of Yan Zi and Zheng Jie cannot be discounted when it comes to the All England ladies doubles title. They were victorious in London in 2006, having claimed the title at the Australian Open earlier in the year. They became the first-ever Chinese Grand Slam champions, and since then have been playing some outstanding tennis. Zheng Jie surprised the tennis world when she defeated world number one Ana Ivanovic at Wimbledon 2008, becoming the first Chinese tennis player to reach a grand slam semi-final match!
They are currently ranked seventh in the world, but when you consider that they have only racked up 1527 points compared to the Black/Huber team effort of 7400 points, then there should be ‘no contest’
Wimbledon ladies' doubles tennis players, Lisa Raymond from the USA and her Australian partner, Samantha Stosur, are probably the other team which could snatch the ladies doubles in 2009. They have been together for two years now, but there is no sign of the magic drying up.
Together the Wimbledon ladies’ doubles tennis players have amassed 20 titles including the coveted US and French Open crowns. They have claimed the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships in two successive years, but have yet to win the grass court championships at Wimbledon. They are currently ranked second in the world, with 3628 points, less than half of the Black/Huber combination.
The Chinese-Taipei tandem of Chuang Chia-Jung & Chan Yung-Jan only shot to prominence in the 2007 season. They surprised the most ardent tennis fan when they reached the finals of the Australian Open, their debut Grand Slam event. They ended up losing to the number three seeds, Cara Black and Liezel Huber, but had claimed the scalps of geographic arch-rivals Yan Zi and Zheng Jie en route.
Their record for the season was tournament wins at Bangalore, Birmingham and S-Hertogenbosch, and runners-up at the US Open, Indian Wells and Pattya City. They are currently ranked number seven in the world with 1527 points.
Any of these teams could go on to win the tournament, and fans are eagerly punting on whether the power-partnership of Black and Huber can claim the Wimbledon 2009 ladies' doubles title from defending champions Venus and Serena Williams? The 2009 Grand Slam betting season is going to an exciting one!
