Wimbledon Championships Winners

Roger Federer of Switzerland walks off court with the winners trophy alongside Rafael Nadal of Spain following the Men's Singles final match against during day thirteen of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships

Wimbledon has produced several outstanding tennis stars in virtually every decade of its 130 years in existence. Perhaps it is the wonderful tradition of the event, or the fact that it is the last remaining Grand Slam tournament to sport a natural surface, grass. Whatever the reason, Wimbledon has always managed to bring the best out in its contenders.

There are six players who have excelled on centre court in recent years – Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and the incumbent men’s number one, Roger Federer.

Martina Navratilova holds the most singles titles, with nine. She is followed up by the indomitable Steffi Graf and Pete Sampras with seven apiece and then it is the turn of the unassailable Billie Jean King, who has claimed six singles crowns. Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg share a record of five consecutive singles titles, and Federer is by no means over yet.

Several other players have claimed the coveted title more than once – Rod Laver, John Newcombe, the wayward Jimmy Connors and the decorous Stefan Edberg have lifted the ornate silver cup to the heavens on two occasions, whilst German, Boris Becker, the belligerent John McEnroe and Chris Evert have claimed the singles crown thrice. It is only Venus Williams who has claimed the Rosewater Dish on four occasions.
