2008 Wimbledon Mens Final Result

The crowds at Wimbledon witnessed on of the greatest finals in the tournament’s history yesterday, as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer clashed in an epic five set encounter.

Nadal looked certain to win the match and the tournament in straight sets when he took the first two sets 6-4, dazzling Federer with his strength and speed. However a series of rain breaks seemed to shift the momentum to Federer, and the Swiss came back fighting to take the third set in a thrilling tie-breaker.

The fourth set was a nail-biting affair, where Federer and Nadal matched each other game for game, before the world number one clinched the second tie-breaker and forced the game into a fifth and final set.

The 5th set was played as darkness descended on Wimbledon. Nadal looked to be tiring, but nevertheless pushed Federer all the way, routinely coming close to breaking Federer’s serve only for the Swiss maestro to shut the door with brilliant play.

Rafael Nadal finally broke Federer’s serve in the 14th game of the final set to go 8-7 up. The Spaniard then held his nerve to win his service game and claim the Wimbledon title 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(8), 9-7 after 4 hours and 48 minutes of play – the longest Wimbledon final in history.

Nadal’s victory made him the first player since Bjorn Borg to claim both the French Open and Wimbledon men's singles titles in a single calendar year.
