Wimbledon 2008 Results: Semi Finals - Women's Draw
The 2008 Wimbledon women’s final is set to be an all Williams affair after both of the Williams sisters triumphed without much difficulty in their Wimbledon semi-final matches.
Venus Williams was the first to progress through to the final after beating Elena Dementieva of Russia. Williams totally outclassed Dementieva in the first set, winning 6-1 as she accelerated to an early lead. Dementieva fought back hard in the second set, but ultimately had no answer to Williams’ power as she went down 6-1, 7-6 (3-0).
Venus Williams seventh appearance in a Wimbledon final in eight years sets her up for her fifth Wimbledon title.
Serena Williams progressed to the 2008 Wimbledon final later in the day by beating China’s Jie Zheng. Williams thumped Zheng in the first set, holding serve for a 6-2 score. Zheng eased into the game in the second set, pushing Williams to a tie-breaker which Williams went on to win for a final score of 6-2, 7-6 (5).
She definitely pushed me," Serena said of Zheng after the match. "Unbelievable, and not only that she played a great game. She played like she had nothing to lose and she didn't.”
The 2008 Wimbledon women’s final marks the second occasion that Venus Williams and her younger sister have had to compete for the title.
