Cara Black & Liezel Huber - Wimbledon Ladies Doubles Tennis Players

Cara Black and Liezel Huber have surpassed all expectations in their first season together since mid-2005. They are currently the top doubles team in the world with 7400 points and have made history by being the first number one tandem to lift the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships crown as well.Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Leizel Huber of South Africa (L) celebrate victory with their trophies following the Women's Doubles final match against Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia and Ai Sugiyama of Japan during day thirteen of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship

The all-African pair - Black from Zimbabwe and Huber originally from South Africa, but now an American - got together briefly in 2001 and won their very first tournament together, the Princess Cup in Tokyo. They played sporadically together until 2005. Their 2008 season was not as eventful as their amazing 2007 season though, with the team losing at Wimbledon 2008 to Venus and Serena Williams.

The dynamic duo found form in early 2005, winning in Rome and claiming their first ladies’ doubles title at the All England Club. They also made it as far as the semi-finals on clay at Roland Garros, and then tragedy struck. Huber suffered a shocking left knee injury which required surgery.

While her partner recuperated Black joined up with Australian, Rennae Stubbs. She and Stubbs had together claimed the Wimbledon 2004 ladies’ doubles crown.

Cara Black & Liezel Huber, Wimbledon ladies’ doubles tennis players, have enjoyed a dream season in 2007:

  • Nine wins - The Australian Open, Wimbledon, the Sony Ericsson Tour Championships, Paris, Antwerp, Dubai, San Diego, Moscow and Linz
  • Runners-up – Miami, Toronto & New Haven
  • Semi-finalists – Gold Coast, Sydney, Amelia Island, Charleston, Berlin, Rome, Roland Garros, Birmingham, Eastbourne & Zurich

“It’s been a fantastic year, not only for us but for our husbands as well, who contribute a great amount to our success,” said the 28-year-old Black. “I think the highlight for me was winning the second Wimbledon title together.”

The Black/Huber combination is looking formidable going into 2009, and if experience and ranking points are anything to go by, then Black and Huber surely have their hands half on the trophy. There are other Wimbledon ladies' doubles players who could make it on the day, but at this moment in time Cara Black and Liezel Huber are most likely to defeat the powerful Williams Sisters at the All England Club.
