2009 Wimbledon Preview

The highlight of the tennis season gets underway this week at the 2009 Wimbledon championships. Last year’s tournament provided fans with some epic matches, and more drama is in store for this year’s tournaments as the world’s top players join battle for the most coveted title in tennis.

The Federer Effect
Roger Federer bounced back from a sustained period of bad form to win the French Open in June. The former world number one enters the 2009 Wimbledon Championships as the outright favourite to win the title for the 5th time in his career – thereby breaking Pete Sampras’ record of 14 career grand slam titles.

With Rafael Nadal’s defence of his Wimbledon title crippled by chronic knee problems, Federer’s route to the final is unlikely to be a bumpy one. The player most pundits tip to give Federer something to think about is home favourite Andy Murray, whose rapidly improving game will be ideally suited to the grass courts of Wimbledon.

While there’s a large gulf between Federer and his rivals in the men’s singles draw, history has proven that Wimbledon is capable of delivering stunning upsets. One of the favourites to turn the tournament on its head must be Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who is expected to thrive on the fast courts of Wimbledon.

A Williams Monopoly
Bookmakers have priced Serena and Venus Williams as the favourites to claim the title in the ladies singles draw of the 2009 Wimbledon Championship.

There have been only two occasions since the turn of the Millennium that a Williams sister has failed to lift the Rosewater Dish, and with the sisters demonstrating a distinct preference for the conditions at Wimbledon there’s no reason to think this won’t be the case again this year.

Looking to end the Williams dominance of the tournament will be top seed Dinara Safina (who is precariously close to forging a reputation as a choker) and her cohort of Russian seeds, which includes a rapidly improving Maria Sharapova and French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetosva.
